FED: Iraqi man on people smuggling charges
SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - A 36-year-old Iraqi man was to face court today over his alleged
involvement in the deaths of 353 asylum seekers who drowned on their voyage to Australia.
Khaleed Shnayf Daoed was to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on 12 charges of people
smuggling.
The hearing will determine whether Daoed should stand trial for his alleged involvement
in organising the ill-fated voyage of the boat that came to be known as SIEV X (unknown
suspected illegal entry vessel).
The overcrowded fishing boat carrying 397 people sank south of Indonesia on October
19, 2001. Only 44 of the mainly Afghan and Iraqi asylum seekers survived.
Daoed could face up to 20 years' jail if convicted.
