THE first major exhibition in Cape Town of work by the late acclaimed artist Alexis Preller runs at the Iziko South African National Gallery until February 28.

Alexis Preller: Africa, the Sun and Shadows showcases a wide selection of the artist's work as well as a number of artefacts, documents and photographs relevant to his life.

Preller (1911-1975) spent most of his life in Pretoria and his work was highly unconventional, innovative and impossible to classify in terms of the mainstream art movements of his time.
